Fn-key support?

Does anyone know the best way of getting support for Fn keys? (both on
my Vaio S1XP and more generally)

In my case, I've loaded the sonypi module but I can't assign the Fn
volume shortcuts to the volume actions in Gnome, for instance, as they
aren't detected.

There has been support for this when I've been running other
distributions, so I know it can be done.  I'm happy to try and do some
of the work myself but am not quite sure where to start.
