I have loaded windows XP before. So I have given another partition for "/" ie 48gb and 2400mb for swap It was installed succesfully. Now I am getting GRUB boot loader .But when I am selecting Fedora core it is showing following error and stopped. Uncompressing linux ok booting the kernel Redhat nash version 6.0.19 starting unable to access resume device (LABEL=SWAP-SDA 4) mount : could not find file system /dev/root setuproot : moving /dev failed : no such file or directory setuproot :error mounting /proc : no such file or directory setuproot : error mounting /sys : no such file or directory switch root : mount failed : no such file or directory and here it stops but I am getting no problem when I was loading Fedora core (except the sound) device problem). I have also tried both fedora releases i.e. for i386 and x86 But I am getting the same problem. So this is my ardent request could anybody solve the problem. I wouldn't dare to draw that kind of conclusions. Missing up-to-date video- or sound drivers, or even SATA issues with Intel's Santa Rosa chipset, might cause you many headaches and these "details" differ between Linux distros and also between RHEL 5.x and FC6. I don't know about Dell Vostro's, but I've learned (especially with laptops) that you really have to test the distro you want to run on that specific system (or know that someone else did that). Having said that, some laptop vendors change their chips during the life cycle or have numerous variants, so you should be aware of this too. Better ask it on the RHEL5-list, there are also Dell people on that list AFAIK, so you might get a more concrete answer there. -- -- Jos Vos -- X/OS Experts in Open Systems BV | Phone: +31 20 6938364 -- Amsterdam, The Netherlands | Fax: +31 20 6948204 From jos at xos.nl Sun Jan 6 22:19:09 2008 From: jos at xos.nl (Jos Vos) Date: Sun, 6 Jan 2008 23:19:09 +0100 Subject: Dell Vostro 1500n with Centos/RHEL-5.1 In-Reply-To: <3da3b5b40801061359i6ca9b2a3x91fd8937e5422231@mail.gmail.com> References: <3da3b5b40801061343u6c3f59b0ta1d173aca4a3a394@mail.gmail.com> <1199656338.5300.4.camel@F8NB.homenet.local> <3da3b5b40801061359i6ca9b2a3x91fd8937e5422231@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <20080106221909.GA29330@jasmine.xos.nl> On Sun, Jan 06, 2008 at 11:59:50PM +0200, Ahmed Kamal wrote: > I really appologize for asking this here, but here is as close as I could > get. This is a correct observation. Even a system certified for SLES9 (IIRC) didn't run RHEL4, just because it needed 915resolution (to patch the Intel video chipset BIOS table). This was easily fixable, but it shows that only the target OS is a reliable test. -- -- Jos Vos -- X/OS Experts in Open Systems BV | Phone: +31 20 6938364 -- Amsterdam, The Netherlands | Fax: +31 20 6948204 From gerold at lugd.org Sun Jan 6 22:21:57 2008 From: gerold at lugd.org (Gerold Kassube) Date: Sun, 06 Jan 2008 23:21:57 +0100 Subject: Dell Vostro 1500n with Centos/RHEL-5.1 In-Reply-To: <20080106220825.GA27969@jasmine.xos.nl> References: <3da3b5b40801061343u6c3f59b0ta1d173aca4a3a394@mail.gmail.com> <1199656338.5300.4.camel@F8NB.homenet.local> <20080106220825.GA27969@jasmine.xos.nl> Message-ID: <1199658117.5300.8.camel@F8NB.homenet.local> Am Sonntag, den 06.01.2008, 23:08 +0100 schrieb Jos Vos: > On Sun, Jan 06, 2008 at 10:52:18PM +0100, Gerold Kassube wrote: > > I wouldn't dare to draw that kind of conclusions. ^^ OK :-) > Better ask it on the RHEL5-list, there are also Dell people on that > list AFAIK, so you might get a more concrete answer there. ^^ IMHO you can address Matt directly; his details are listed here http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/MattDomsch > -- Gerold Kassube -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... My laptop in its configuration does not include a NVidia card, but a intel graphic controller. I'll attach the lspci of it, in case it can be of any help. I remember that in Ubuntu the /etc/acpi/ directory was populated with many scripts to load/unload drivers while in my Fedora installation that directory is empty. Does any similar script belong to Fedora anywhere? I'm running Fedora 8, x86_64. It has the Intel GM965/GL960 graphics controller. I have two monitors connected. Both are Dell 2007FP's, that can run 1600x1200. Of course, one is connected via DVI, and other via VGA. I know the controller is capable of driving both monitors at the same time, because Windows can do it. System-config-display cannot get it right. I have yet to fathom the mysteries of X configuration, and nothing I've tried thus far has worked. The best I've been able to do is to actually use the Ubuntu config file, which at least displays on the digital monitor. Tweaking the config (changing PCI address, changing driver to vesa) switches the output from DVI to VGA, but I cannot get both displayed at the same time. I'd love to have an extended desktop. lspci -v and my current xorg.conf are below. Any help is greatly appreciated! Here is my initial problem: http://fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=178415 I seem to have (partially) solved this by using gstreamer-properties (thanks Seth!) to set the default input back to PulseAudio from "Custom". Not sure how that changed, and I'd never heard of this utility till today. I'm still left with an unresponsive mic. PA volume meter shows flatline so it seems to be muted somehow, but everywhere I look shows that it is not. Part of my problem is that I still don't really know how all this stuff fits together -- ALSA, PulseAudio and GStreamer. Furthermore, it was all working till some recent event (maybe a pupdate, not sure) that nuked it for me. Any help in diagnosing sound issues would be most appreciated. I'll echo my solution back to here and the forum once I get it solved. Today, I changed the screen resolution to something smaller using Menu>System>Administration>Display, and I can not change it back. The display used to be set to generic LCD display and the resolution - I think - was set to 1680x1050. Now the display is set to generic LCD panel 1024x768 and the highest resolution available is 1360x768. When I change the monitor type, it simply says the change will not take effect until I log out and in again, and it does not allow me to change the resolution to something higher (even though the monitor type is set to be a generic LCD with some higher resolution). When I log out and in, the monitor type is set to what it was before (see above). Web search has not solved the problem. Neither was I able to find out what monitor I have, nor what might be the problem. Video Card is nVidia Corporation G72M. Any help? Thanks! Good to hear that someone has had success on this front. I, too, have been trying to get consistent WiFi results. I've been working with three different NICs, one USB, the other two PCMCIA. The one one with which I've been successful has been a Netgear WG111US Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter. However, its performance has been erratic. I can successfully connect to my WAP, work for a while, and then the connection drops. I notice that the device gets especially hot and am wondering if this is the cause for its eventual failure. Comments? On the PCMCIA front, I've been testing two cards: an old Linksys WPC111 (only 802.11b) and a Netgear WPNT511. WPC111: lcpci does not see the Linksys WPC111, but ifconfig -a does. I can assign a static IP to the WPC111 and use other commands to configure it to work with my WAP but I get no throughput. WPNT511: lscpi identifies the Netgear WPNT511, but ifconfig -a does not. I have used ndiswrapper to load the appropriate driver and my results are still the same. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 600m, btw. I have no problem getting a PCMCIA Netgear Ethernet card (Linksys EtherFast 10/100 Integrated CardBus PC Card PCM200B) to work, btw. W/o any droppoff. The built-in Ethernet on the Laptop failed. Apparently, other Inspiron 600m users have mentioned that the Ethernet port has high failure rates. As for wireless, some reviewes mention that the Dell Inspiron 600m has been shipped with Wifi, either Centrino or a mini PCI card bolted into one of the bays. This one appears to have neither. Or is there a tool/command for checking for onboard Centrino. A while ago I had to use ndiswrapper to force it to work, but it's no longer necessary (now works with bcm43xx). I've tried 'no security', 'WEP' and 'WPA2' (with wpa_supplicant) - all of them work. > As for wireless, some reviewes mention that the Dell Inspiron 600m > has been shipped with Wifi, either Centrino or a mini PCI card bolted > into one of the bays. In BIOS settings I can see that 'on-board WIFI is present' and 'on-board Bluetooth is missing' - which both are true ;) So I'm sure Your 600m will also tell You the truth. regards, -- jarek From eaperezh at gmail.com Sat Jan 26 17:21:29 2008 From: eaperezh at gmail.com (Erick Perez) Date: Sat, 26 Jan 2008 12:21:29 -0500 Subject: FC8 and Toshiba satellite running from batteries wont boot Message-ID: Hi, Last night i loaded the latest FC8 on my toshiba satellite l35-sp4068. it boots fine except for some modules (wifi, toshiba_acpi, etc) but those problems might be resolved over time. However what puzzles me is that it runs perfectly when plugged to the AC. However, If fc8 is booted and i unplug the AC, it takes over two minutes for fc8 to "see" that we are now running on batteries. if i shutdown fc8 then unplug the AC then boot fc8 again, it panics. kernel starts booting and then panics. it miay be something related to fc8 not realizing we are running on baterries beacuse if i plug the laptop again to the AC and boot fc8, it boots perfectly. some modules do not load. modprobe toshiba, modprobe toshiba-acpi fail with "device not found". has anyone experienced fc8 in a laptop where you can boot perfectly plugged to the ACbut not when running on batteries? any parameters that can be passed to the kernel at boot? I have even tried "single" mode at boot, no help. thanks, -- ------------------------------------------------------------ Erick Perez Panama Sistemas Integradores de Telefonia IP y Soluciones Para Centros de Datos Panama, Republica de Panama Cel Panama. +(507) 6694-4780 ------------------------------------------------------------ From eaperezh at gmail.com Sat Jan 26 17:55:11 2008 From: eaperezh at gmail.com (Erick Perez) Date: Sat, 26 Jan 2008 12:55:11 -0500 Subject: FC8 and Toshiba satellite running from batteries wont boot In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: On Jan 26, 2008 12:21 PM, Erick Perez wrote: > Hi, > Last night i loaded the latest FC8 on my toshiba satellite l35-sp4068. > it boots fine except for some modules (wifi, toshiba_acpi, etc) but > those problems might be resolved over time. > However what puzzles me is that it runs perfectly when plugged to the AC. > However, > If fc8 is booted and i unplug the AC, it takes over two minutes for > fc8 to "see" that we are now running on batteries. > if i shutdown fc8 then unplug the AC then boot fc8 again, it panics. > kernel starts booting and then panics. it miay be something related to > fc8 not realizing we are running on baterries beacuse if i plug the > laptop again to the AC and boot fc8, it boots perfectly. > > some modules do not load. > modprobe toshiba, modprobe toshiba-acpi fail with "device not found". > > has anyone experienced fc8 in a laptop where you can boot perfectly > plugged to the ACbut not when running on batteries? > any parameters that can be passed to the kernel at boot? > > I have even tried "single" mode at boot, no help. > > thanks, > > > > -- I managed to write some of the dump. here it is: *********************** uncompressing linux...Ok, booting the kernel Red Hast nash version 6.0.19 starting BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000024 printing eip: c04b93d5 *pde = 77e2c067 modules linked in: sata_sil libata sd_mod scsi_mod ext3 jbd mbcache uhci_hcd ohci_hcd ehci_hcd ***************************** then the boot stops. I tried switching to console and that doesn't work either. Is there a way to troubleshoot such cases?
