I've installed F9 preview (+ updates) and installed the kernel-xen package etc. However when I boot via the XEN kernel, the boot process just stops at "xen is relinquishing vga control" and nothing further happens. Some times i feel fedora 8 better when compare with UI. KDE 4.0 is certainly a major change, which does lack a lot of the polish and niceties that KDE-3.5.x provided. If you're not comfortable with it, Fedora 8 and KDE-3.5.x is still a viable option. I'm curious still, by "functionality is very weak", can you provide some details? -- Rex From carlos.gomes.correia at gmail.com Wed May 14 21:21:19 2008 From: carlos.gomes.correia at gmail.com (Carlos Correia) Date: Wed, 14 May 2008 22:21:19 +0100 Subject: asus f3sv-- audio problem Message-ID: <482b57d3.06a0100a.71ae.41d5@mx.google.com> Hi Still have a problem with audio in fedora 9 L with a Asus f3sv -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There's just a lot of stuff missing. Some of it is missing on purpose, replaced with something more elegant, but most of it simply hasn't been converted to work with KDE 4 yet. The KDE developers realized that they had reached the point where the only way to get people off their asses and convert their apps was to release KDE 4 and deprecate KDE 3. By adopting KDE 4 as soon as feasible after its release, we're exposing ourselves to some growing pains, but the payoff is that the transition will be quick and focused, rather than languishing for years. When I first saw KDE 4, I was a bit miffed at how much was missing, but it's come a very long way in just a few months. Peering under the hood a bit, I'm convinced of the KDE developers' claim that the overhaul to the codebase will make it easier to maintain and extend in the future. Given the rate of development, it's quite easy for minor features to be overlooked, so if something's missing or broken, please file a bug. -- Chris From mangelp at gmail.com Mon May 19 19:03:52 2008 From: mangelp at gmail.com (=?ISO-8859-1?Q?Miguel_=C1ngel_P=E9rez?=) Date: Mon, 19 May 2008 21:03:52 +0200 Subject: asus f3sv-- audio problem In-Reply-To: <482b57d3.06a0100a.71ae.41d5@mx.google.com> References: <482b57d3.06a0100a.71ae.41d5@mx.google.com> Message-ID: <8304962d0805191203l5830650fj8734cdd6a44a43e1@mail.gmail.com> Hi Carlos, Have you tried adding these lines to the /etc/modprobe.conf file? options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=toshiba enable=yes position_fix=0 alias snd-card-7 snd-usb-audio options snd-usb-audio index=7 I also have an intel high definition audio device and it works for me. The sound card is an ALC262 chip using the snd-hda-intel driver. I've followed the suggestions at: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=330763 (add: options snd-hda-intel model=hippo) and: http://goonanism.com/blog/2007/12/02/sound-on-a-toshiba-tecra-a8-with-ubuntu-710/ (add: options snd-hda-intel enable=1 index=0 model=basic) However, neither of these approaches worked at getting sound out of either the headphones or the speakers. I've also run alsaunmute and alsamixer to unmute the various channels without any luck. This is from dmesg with the hippo model: ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_intel.c:1810: chipset global capabilities = 0x4401 firewire_ohci: Added fw-ohci device 0000:03:0b.1, OHCI version 1.10 ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_intel.c:749: codec_mask = 0x3 ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:2211: hda_codec: model 'hippo' is selected ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:1073: Cannot find slave Surround Playback Volume, skipped ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:1073: Cannot find slave Center Playback Volume, skipped ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:1073: Cannot find slave LFE Playback Volume, skipped ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:1073: Cannot find slave Side Playback Volume, skipped ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:1073: Cannot find slave Speaker Playback Volume, skipped ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:1073: Cannot find slave Line-Out Playback Volume, skipped ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:1073: Cannot find slave Surround Playback Switch, skipped ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:1073: Cannot find slave Center Playback Switch, skipped ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:1073: Cannot find slave LFE Playback Switch, skipped ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:1073: Cannot find slave Side Playback Switch, skipped ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:1073: Cannot find slave Speaker Playback Switch, skipped and lspci: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02) Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems Unknown device 0001 I've attached gzipped versions of both in full. The laptop has a 1280x800 display resolution and an ATI Mobility Radeon X2600 video card (according to ACER web site --- but probably it is the same as ATI HD 2600 if I well understood) Fedora 8 does not have a specific driver for such video card, therefore it proposes a generic vesa driver, which does not handle 1280x800 resolution. Therefore I downloaded and installed the ATI driver for HD 2600, from ATI web site. Now the resolution is set correctly, but as a drawback the motion of objects (like windows) on desktop is very slow and jumpy --- awful effect, really!! Did anybody experience similar problems? Does anybody has a solution to suggest? Many thanks to you all! I don't think you can resume with the nv driver since it does not have the code to do it. You'll have to avoid using suspend (actually in F8 I think the options didn't even show up if you used the nv driver, don't know why that changed) or install the latest nvidia blob which does work if you go through some nasty tricks. I did alittle research just now and unfortunately this is due to a hardware limitation. Compiz makes a texture out of the entire desktop and apparently a single texture must fit into the video card's memory. The maximum texture size that can fit in the radeon 7500's memory is 2048x2048, which is alittle smaller then the virtual desktops we are working with. I did find if you install driconf, execute it, and enable large texture support, I can do two 1024x768 desktops with the effects enabled. I thought I could do without the effects but I *HATE* the default task switcher. So I will be making do with dual 1024x768 most of the time. But I had my 1024x768 plus 1600x1200 monitor working fine out the VGA port of my T42 without desktop effects. I've attached the post below that works. Substitute DVI-0 for VGA-0 if you're using the VGA port. Unfortunately the desktop effects problem is due to a limitation with the card.. Compiz needs the entire desktop (both screens together) to be a single texture, and the card can only handle a maximum texture size of 2048x2048. HERE IS THE POST: i have a T42p and an external display connected via DVI on the Thinkpad's docking station. When X starts, both displays show the same content (mirrored display). So i first have to switch off one of them and then switch on again for real dual head display: xrandr --output DVI-0 --off xrandr --output DVI-0 --mode 1600x1200 --left-of LVDS I also have to add "Virtual 3200 1200" in SubSection "Display" of Section "Screen" in xorg.conf to get an 1600x1200+1600x1200 resolution. Webcam > 9 Scanner/Cameras And the answer is ... *maybe* You need to provide more details of the particular devices. Bluetooth tends to work, but, not being a bluetooth user (other than my laptop supports it), I can't give you any details. USB Flash drives tend to work fairly well. The USB Storage device interface seems to be well solved on Linux. You will probably have more problems with the filesystem type on the USB stick than with the stick itself. Ditto for USB hard drives, though, there was a USB Hard Drive that had problems on Linux because the manufacturers ignored the USB storage standard and implemented an ms only shortcut which caused the drives to fail to work properly on Linux. There were solutions published for how to get around this, but ultimately, the manufacturers were at fault. Movies (multimedia in general) is problematic. Some solutions may not be "legal" in some locations. Getting around DRM is illegal in some countries. Solutions exist. You will need to find them. Read as much as you can in the Fedora Release Notes about multimedia, and the supporting documents (like FedoraGuide.info). The same with Music, but, in general, there are enough tools out there that can either play or convert odd codecs into something that *is* playable. There are a number of Telephony tools out there. It depends on your exact requirements. Skype, MythPhone, Ekiga, and others exist. If you are having problems with your microphone, post about them here. Most microphones are a simple device and should work with the Linux sound systems. Note, Pulseaudio in F9 is new and different from previous versions of Fedora. There are still a few rough spots with it on some hardware. Webcams are a different matter. Not all webcams work. You *will* need to know the chipset it uses and arrange to use the appropriate driver for it (if one exists). Many of the drivers out there are still ALPHA quality, a few are BETA quality, and others work well enough for general use. YMMV, and you need to be aware. Laptop Manufacturers change the underlying hardware at a whim because of supply/demand issues and versioning without thinking of us poor Linux users. Most cameras work as USB (or Firewire) storage devices, and can be mounted directly into your files system. Of course, then you have to navigate to the proper subdirectory to actually find your pics/vids. Others can use tools like gphoto2 to access your camera memory directly. Again, YMMV, and it depends on which camera you have. Older cameras are more likely to be problematic than newer ones. Scanners need to be twain compatible in order to work correctly. What bus does it use? USB is common today, SCSI and Parallel was common a few years ago. Parallel port scanners have the worst support. They are also the least common today. IHTH! -- Kevin J. ACPI related issues (sleeping -- or waking up after a sleep to be more accurate) 2. Audio *in* -- audio out always works, but getting the mic to work for skype etc is very, very, very, very hard. For me anyway. Re playing video etc -- the secret is to install the right software. Redhat have a very strict open source / no patent policy, so a fresh Fedora install would seem useless when it comes to playing the most popular formats out there (MPEG despite being an "open" standard is riddled with patent issues). Go to http://rpm.livna.org/rlowiki/ and install software such as mplayer and you then have capabilities that would far exceed what comes bundled with Windows and Mac. The only other problem I've encountered is playing (deliberately) broken DVDs: there are a few free Windows players which work with Wine (Windows emulator). Takes a bit of work to get them working, but googling around you'll find many tutorials on this. Finally: remember that with modern hardware you can run virtual machines with almost no performance penalty. So the few bits of Windows software that you really need to run and that won't work with Wine -- just create a Windows VM and run them in a window (you'll need an Windows install CD/DVD and a licence key to get started) The only thing I havn't yet achieved is to run a virtual Mac :-( That would be nice. I used to have a perfection 1650 and it worked great with Linux, but I had to replace it and my V200 photo hardly works. I installed the proper driver but it will only scan in two resolutions. 300dpi is one of them which is fine but I also need 600dpi and the driver won't do it. I had to install a Windows VM who's sole purpose in life is to scan. I also have a USB drive which gives me no problems.
