Sendmail stuff-up

Well, I applied the latest patch to my Sendmail config and have managed to
stuff it up well and truly. I am running RH9 and Sendmail
8.12.11.20060308/8.12.8.

SMTP authentication stopped working first and in trying to fix it I managed
to tie myself in knots. I ended up with errors like this:

Mar 27 15:29:01 mail sendmail[16518]: NOQUEUE: SYSERR(root):
/etc/mail/sendmail.cf: line 84: fileclass: cannot open
'ATURE(`access_db',`hash': No such file or directory

In the end, I deleted sendmail.cf and sendmail.mc and forced rpm to install
the new version again. This solved the above problem and Sendmail is now
working to a degree, ie, those hosts in /etc/mail/access are able to relay
mail, which is fine. Mail is delivered to pop3 accounts.

However, I'm getting these errors:

Mar 27 18:27:41 mail sendmail[641]: STARTTLS=server, error:
SSL_CTX_check_private_key failed(/etc/mail/certs/key.pem): 0

I'm also getting this:

Mar 27 18:07:07 mail sendmail[18011]: k2RH75f9018011:
from=<ionel at ah165.net>, size=1936, class=0, nrcpts=1,
msgid=<000001c651c0$ca70ab30$5abfa8c0 at hwg48>, proto=ESMTP, daemon=MTA,
relay=myrelay.net [193.111.201.133]
Mar 27 18:07:07 mail sendmail[18011]: k2RH75f9018011:
to=<bulkemail at mydomain.net>, delay=00:00:01, mailer=esmtp, pri=31936,
stat=queued
Mar 27 18:07:28 mail sendmail[18310]: k2RH75f9018011: SYSERR(root):
mydomain.net. config error: mail loops back to me (MX problem?)
Mar 27 18:07:28 mail sendmail[18310]: k2RH75f9018011:
to=<bulkemail at mydomain.net>, delay=00:00:22, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=esmtp,
pri=121936, relay=mydomain.net. [84.234.16.235], dsn=5.3.5, stat=Local
configuration error
Mar 27 18:07:28 mail sendmail[18310]: k2RH75f9018011: k2RH7RE5018310: DSN:
Local configuration error

Where myrelay.net is my relay server and mydomain.net is the default domain
on the server (Sendmail answers as mail.mydomain.net). The message is spam
being sent to an invalid address.

Other invalid addresses are treated better - I get "no such user here" in
the log, but also "stat=Local configuration error".

Any pointers much appreciated. Getting smtp auth with plain text to work
would be great too!
