redhat9 desktop problems after update

Hello,
after an update (12.March 06)of my redhat9 with yum from the fedora-legacy
repository I experienced the following strange behaviour of my gnome desktop
environment:
when I logout and then login again, I do no longer find my complete old
environment:
1. the desktop picture is replaced with a blank blue background
2. the desktop icons disappeared ( the .gnome-desktop directory is still
there
and the files of the desktop icons also)
3. the usual popup-menue which appears when you right-click on the
desktop does
not appear. The desktop seems to be totally inactive.
4. if I start mozilla, I don't see anything happening. Nevertheless,
run-mozilla.sh is there as well as mozilla and mozilla-bin, but not windows
appear on the screen. This is also true for firefox which is installed
separately.

As I checked, the updates done at that time included all from 18.Feb.06
up to
07.Mar.06, i.e. squid, openssh, Apache httpd, sudo, mozilla, nfs-utils,
gaim,
perl, PostgreSQL, perl-DBI, XFree86 and pcre.
I don't logout very often and did it this time to restart the X-server
because
of the XFree86 update.
Does anyone have a suggestion what went wrong? I got this working once
again by removing all (backed-up) gnome configuration files and all
temporary
files in /tmp. After that it worked again, but with a logout today, I am
facing the same problem again and I don't want to clean-up this again and
again just for the sake of login-out. I would appreciate any help.
Best regards,
Joachim

P.S.: I did register to fedora-legacy-list today.
