You need to type

export PATH=$PATH:/opt/j2sdk1.4.2/bin

(assuming that your VM is installed in /opt/j2sdk1.4.2 )

This adds the directory to your PATH variable (Windows has exactly
the same concept and it means exactly the same as it does in 
Windows). It will only work for the current shell unless
you add it to the end of /etc/profile or somewhere like that.
