Printing under Linux very SLOW

I finally set up my Canon BJC 2100 elcheapo printer and it works OK but 
the print quality is very bad and it is excruciatingly slow.

I followed the directions that are in the RedHat 9 documentation as to 
how to setup a printer. There were no glitches at all in the setup, 
however the printing speed is about 4 times slower than that of printing 
to the same printer from the same machine booted into WinXP.

Is this normal?
