How to burn a ext3 file system on a cd?

Years ago, SCO Unix (years before the novell deal) used to be distributed
in a "CD-Tape" format, i.e., it was just a stream of data as if a tar
or cpio file burned directly to CD without benefit of a filesystem.
So, just because we're accustomed to a CD containing a filesystem, is
no reason why it must do so.
