I had a similar problem with a Dell Dimension 4600 with PS2 mouse and
keyboard. It seemed that turning off the BIOS "USB Emulation" (makes USB
mouse and keyboard appear like PS2 devices) made the problem go away.
Maybe your machine has a similar BIOS setting.
