up2date Kernel 2.4.22-1.2135.nptl fatal region error

I've had flawless experience with up2date until tonight trying to upgrade
the Kernel using the -uf options to force the upgrade (past my skiplist).  I
run up2date remotely from a terminal.  It downloads and installs to 100%,
and then launches a zillions lines of:

rpmdb: fatal region error detected; run recovery

What does that mean?
