xcdroast is fast...grip is too slow...

I don't know if this will help you, but I had a similar problem with my
previous mobo, and the only way to work around it was using cdstatus
[http://cdstatus.sourceforge.net/] for ripping instead of cdparanoia or
cdda2wav. I think it's worth a try.
