hotplug & automount cameras and firewire disks

Hello,
I heard that it should be possible to just plug in a usb camera,
firewire disk or ipod and fedora will automagically put an entry in
fstab and display an icon on the desktop.

this never worked for me. maybe because i upgraded to fedora via rh8
and rh9. 

which packages make this work ? maybe i don't have them installed at
all.
