For a CD-RW, you can consider using tar or dump.   However, there
are better alternatives;  layered, hardlinked hard disk -to- hard
disk backups are much cheaper, faster, and easier to recover from.  

Look for "backuppc", "dirvish", or "mike rubel"&"rsync" with your
favorite search engine.  Also check out my incomplete but growing
page at http://www.keithl.com/linuxbackup.html .  The perfect 
hard disk to hard disk alternative isn't here yet, but this is 
already a much better way to go than tapes and CD-RW .
