It isn't compiled in.  You need to have an entry for it in
/etc/modprobe.conf.  Run /sbin/generate-modprobe.conf >
/etc/modprobe.conf and reboot, then see if everything is happier.

If not, post /proc/modules and dmesg output, and we'll see what we can
see.
