L440GX and aic7xxx failure

Are you attempting to install on a hard drive attached to your aic7xxx? 
I have an aic7xxx and Fedora installed fine, probably because the only
thing connected to the SCSI is a CD-RW.  Interesting how it sees the
SCSI card (and uses it) just fine in my case.
