XIO: fatal IO error 104 during install

I have an older PC, IBM 2144-86P with the S3-864 video chipset.

I boot from floppy and am doing an "install from local CD"

When the install process starts I get the following message after "X server
started successfully"

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":1.0" after
0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining
install exited abnormally

The it shuts down and says it's OK to reboot....

I'm going to try a text install as I wasn't planning on using X on this
underpowered machine anyway...
