You can try adding the following to ~/.fonts.conf:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
<!-- ~/.fonts.conf for per-user font configuration -->
<fontconfig>
<alias>
<family>monospace</family>
<prefer>
<family>Bitstream Vera Sans Mono</family>
<family>Luxi Mono</family>
<family>Andale Mono</family>
<family>Courier New</family>
<family>Miriam Mono</family>
<family>Nimbus Mono L</family>
<family>Kochi Gothic</family>
<family>ZYSong18030</family>
<family>AR PL SungtiL GB</family>
<family>AR PL Mingti2L Big5</family>
<family>Baekmuk Gulim</family>
</prefer>
</alias>
</fontconfig>
Don't know if that will work. I haven't tried it myself, but it is what
the documentation (/usr/share/doc/fontconfig-2.2.1/fontconfig-user.html)
said to do.
