Here's a datapoint where it works correctly. I have four systems in a network behind a gateway router providing NAT and reserved
DHCP services:

# ifconfig eth0
eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:03:47:90:C2:D7
          inet addr:  Bcast:  Mask:
          (blah blah blah...)

Are you using static addressing? If not, what does your DHCP server
config look like?
