Why do people compile Fedora kernels?

As a matter of interest,
why do people undergo so much pain compiling Fedora's special kernels?

I've compiled the standard 2.4.23-pre9 and 2.6.0-pre9 kernels
(from http://www.kernel.org)
and they both seem to compile and run perfectly.

The kernel that came with Fedora-1.0 also runs perfectly;
but it doesn't seem to me any better or worse than the standard 2.4.22.

Actually, I have always liked the fact that
choice of distribution and choice of kernel are "orthogonal".
I wouldn't choose a distribution that forced me to run a special kernel.
