up2date: is it working

Having mounted the first fedora system on Friday, I then tried
downloading patches using up2date from fedora.redhat.com.  
No joy on various attempts over the weekend.

No response to ping, although traceroute seems to reach 
ncsugsr-gw-to-ncni-oc48.ncni.net, then get a lot of stars.

At the same time, up2date on a RH9 box nearby works swiftly
(in a matter of seconds.)
