Well, on this IBM Thinkpad R31 we have here, I discovered thanks to my stepson 
pointing it out, that you have to hit the mute button above the main keyboard 
to get any sound from it.  So maybe that can help.

BTW my head nearly exploded reading all your comment with no punctuation :-)

Open up a terminal window and look at the result of typing - maybe you nee

/sbin/ifconfig

and also

/sbin/route

try to copy that in a followup email.
