I figured out the problem finally.

The drive I had was the only drive and I had it jumpered as the master .
When I removed the jumper entirely everything started working.

I don't understand but It works great now.

Not sure how this will help you but here goes. I have 2
WD 120GB harddrives. From my dmesg I get the following:

ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15
hda: attached ide-disk driver.
hda: host protected area => 1
hda: 234441648 sectors (120034 MB) w/8192KiB Cache, CHS=14593/255/63,
hdb: attached ide-disk driver.
hdb: host protected area => 1
hdb: 234441648 sectors (120034 MB) w/8192KiB Cache, CHS=232581/16/63,

Seems my second drive is closest yours. Make sure it is not
connected as cable select. I have mine jumpered master and
