I enabled acpi in my kernel options in grub and the battery monitor appears
to be working now. However, when i put in echo 3 > /proc/acpi/sleep nothing
happens. Is there anything else that needs to be done?

For the last command to work, make sure you have mounted the SysFS
filesystem at /sys:

mount -t sysfs /sys
