This is because the .spec file is missing a definition of a build-root
directory in the "Buildroot:" field, e.g. fedora.us's current
build-root definition is this:

Buildroot: %{_tmppath}/%{name}-%{version}-%{release}-buildroot-%(%{__id_u}
