nvidia driver

I just performed a fresh install of FC1 on my older Athlon machine last
night and all went well.

I wish to install the nVidia Linux driver so that I might once again be
able to run my display at something larger than 1024x768.  Under RH9,
the Linux nVidia driver allowed me to do just that.  However, when I
attempt to install the nVidia driver, it errors out by saying:

   You appear to be compiling the NVIDIA kernel module with   
   a compiler different from the one that was used to compile 
   the running kernel. This may be perfectly fine, but there  
   are cases where this can lead to unexpected behaviour and  
   system crashes.                                            
                                                              
   If you know what you are doing and want to override this   
   check, you can do so by setting IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH.


A quick check through the archives tells me that I should be able to set
a variable up that says:

IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=1


But when I do that, I get yet another error message that says:

   *** Failed cc sanity check. Bailing out! ***
   make: *** [gcc-check] Error 1
   -> Error.
   ERROR: Unable to build the NVIDIA kernel module.


This brings to mind two questions:
1) How do I fix this?
2) Why is there a compiler mismatch in the first place?  (There wasn't
under RH9)
