just blew up my 17" monitor

Yep, I feel your pain.
However, all the monitors I have dealt with in the last 2-3 years have 
just gone into "sleep" mode if the signal rates were out of supported range.
I think newer monitors protect themselves that way.
How old was this 17" monitor?
