Are you using the standard version from Acrobat?
It seems to work fine for me (after setting LANG=C in the 
startup-script) and I'm using the rpm from:
http://rpmfind.net//linux/RPM/ASP/contribs/9/i386/acroread-5.08-0.9asp.i386.html.
Maybe that one will work better for you
