Apache README

In Apache 1.3 I could put a README file in a directory as a
quick-and-dirty substitute for an index.html. This apparently doesn't
work in Apache 2.0, and I can't find any reference to it in "Apache: The
Definitive Guide". Would some kind Apache guru out there please point me
to some on-line docs that tell me how to create a README-equivalent for
v2.0?
