kernel 2.6: USB Mouse won't work :/

curious.  i've been running the pre-2.6 kernels for some time now,
but i download directly from www.kernel.org.  on my inspiron 8100,
both my touchpad and USB logitech optical mouse work just fine.
what would you like me to examine?
