suspend question again

I am sorry to bother everyone again with this question. I asked a couple
of days ago about the suspend button for my laptop.  Someone told me to
type 'apm -s' into the command line in the preferences section without
the quotes of course.  This doesn't seem to do anything.  I don't get an
error the computer just doesn't do anything with it.  Does anyone have
any other ideas??
