The FC1 kernel has the NPTL of kernel 2.6 backported into it. I know that 
older Sun and IBM JVMs work with it (Sun 1.4.2_02 is ok and I believe IBM 
have fixes too). Maybe there's a similar fix/update for your particular 
JVM.
