that sounds like your monitor, buddy.
did you set the correct monitor in the X configuration? the refresh rates are different for different monitors, so if you selected the wrong one you will have a fuzzy screen. you can also just select a 'Generic CRT' if you want to, you probably won't get the best refresh rates, but it'd definitely be workable.
either that or your monitor is on the fritz.
