Telling newbies, or even oldies to write a program doesn't seem to be
the best answer to me.

Use fetchmail to download all messages to one Linux box - the
mail-server. fetchmail should put each users messages in a different
user account for each user.

Use ClamAV to check each message for viruses on the server, possibly
using procmail. (I don't do this bit but I do use procmail to put all
messages through spamassassin).

Then let each users get their mail off the server using IMAP or POP3
according to preference - I use IMAP on with my Linux clients, but my
wife prefers POP3 with Outlook/Windows.

There are some incomplete, and possibly out of date instructions on my
website here: http://www.stevesearle.com/tech/serv.html#email (The
sendmail stuff is probably not relevant to what you want to do).

Good luck

Steve
