I take it this is an external rodent. If so, what happens if you don't
use the external rodent at all and use the built-in
touchpad/eraser/whatever? X may respond differently to different
rodents.

To boot without X, in grub (the boot loader), add 'init 3' to the
arguments to the kernel. See the grub on-screen directions for how to
do this. To make it permanent, edit /etc/inittab. See the notes above
this line:
id:5:initdefault:
You will probably change it to read:
id:3:initdefault:
