nvidia and FX5700

I'm having trouble with the nvidia 5336.run drivers and a new geforce
fx5700. It locks at the point when the splash screen should appear
then needing a hard reboot,I looked for all the drivers and (to me)
are installed,perms' to /dev/nvidia* are 666,there is 'nofb' 'acpi=off'
'apm=off' in boot args.As my card is not supported in FC 1 would that
have anything to do with it,I have tried with and without 
XFree86-Mesa-libGL but no difference.
I'll post the relevant logs and configs if wanted
