As other indicated "setenv" is a "csh" (the C shell) built in.
If you are running "bash" as your shell, scan the bash man page
for environment, '=', 'env' and 'export'.
# User specific environment and startup programs
PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin
export PATH
COOLWORD=wintergreen
export COOLWORD
export COLDSTUFF=icecream
