The noise from fortune is confusing ssh.

You need to wrap your "echo;fortune;echo" inside a test.  Commonly
this is a test for the prompt environment variable ($PS1).

This might be enough of a hint, see if you can find examples.
For now comment it out so you can get other work done.

"Is this Shell Interactive?"
