When you did:
mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/floppy
It didn't work? Pasting a bit of the /var/log/messages that are relevant
will be helpful, also, what kernel are you using?

No, looks like a hardware issue. Make sure booting off the USB key is
disabled in BIOS, otherwise the computer won't boot any longer :)
