The first time I tried to mount a USB stick on FC1 it was detected as
/dev/sda1 but would only mount on /dev/sdb1
The /var/log/messages showed /dev/sda was being detected but would not
work. In the log file there was a reference to sdb that I tried and
it worked.
Here is what showed up in the log file.
Mar 18 11:19:03 eagle1 kernel: sda: Unit Not Ready, sense:
Mar 18 11:19:03 eagle1 kernel: sda : READ CAPACITY failed.
Mar 18 11:19:04 eagle1 kernel: sda : status = 1, message = 00, host =
0, driver
= 08
Mar 18 11:19:04 eagle1 kernel: Info fld=0xa00 (nonstd), Current
sd00:00: sense key Not Ready
Mar 18 11:19:04 eagle1 kernel: sda : block size assumed to be 512
bytes, disk size 1GB.
Mar 18 11:19:04 eagle1 kernel: sda: test WP failed, assume Write Enabled
Mar 18 11:19:05 eagle1 kernel: sda: I/O error: dev 08:00, sector 0
Mar 18 11:19:05 eagle1 kernel: sdb: Unit Not Ready, sense:
Mar 18 11:19:05 eagle1 kernel: sdb : READ CAPACITY failed.
Mar 18 11:19:06 eagle1 kernel: sdb : status = 1, message = 00, host =

Mar 18 11:19:06 eagle1 kernel: Info fld=0xa00 (nonstd), Current
sd00:00: sense key Not Ready

Mar 18 11:19:06 eagle1 kernel: sdb: I/O error: dev 08:10, sector 0
At a later time it was reversed and I had to mount the stick using sda
This has occured on two different FC1 installs.
Note, the problem changed in regards to device detected depending on
pluggin in our digital camera. This is one area where USB needs work.
I found this by running (as root)
tail -f /var/log/messages
when I plugged in the memory stick.
Hope this helps.
