Disk space needed for yum

Sounds like a small hard drive (by modern standards, anyway). Have you
considered using the upgrade path on the floppy/CD-ROMs?

Can you symlink the directory you need in /usr to another partition
temporarily? Even a removable media drive would work in a pinch.

You may also be able to upgrade incrementally:

yum update a*

etc. Don't reboot in the process, and accept all the dependencies as
you go. I did that on an elderly machine here and it worked. See my

In any case, back yourself up throughly first.
