Can't print from applications

The logs say added a remote printer.  A remote printer is a printer on
another Linux box on your network.  Perhaps you meant to add a remote
printer?

Are you setting up a remote printer to access a printer on your
network or are you setting up a local printer connected to lp0 (your
lpt port)?

If you are setting up from localhost inwhich the printer is directly
connected to the parallel port on localhost, this is not a remote
printer.

However, I have no idea why or how you would be able to printer from
root and not from an application.  Maybe you should check sharing
under the file menu of the print config tool in Gnome?
