Tar/Zip/Rar trouble

I have now tried it from the command line and 
$ tar tzf mytar.tgz
gives:

gzip: stdin: invalid compressed data--format violated
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

Any ideas?
