Ditto, all my machines are on 2.6 now. It should work on 2.4...
Why don't you run tail -f /var/log/messages in a console window and plug the
thing in, see if anything suggestive pops up.
Also, I heartily recommend yum for keeping your machine up to date, although
there's not much wrong with apt and up2date. You can get an
improved /etc/yum.conf from here:

Then do yum update and see what it says. You can also use yum to update your
FC1 -> FC2, I did this on a couple of machines, including one server in
another country over ssh with good success. But actually installing from the
isos will be more certain.
