I'm not "bitterly opposed to it".
I don't care where you compile your kernels.
I _am_ opposed to people giving misleading advice to newbies.

Personally, I only keep my own material in my home directory,
so I can easily back it up with rsync.
However, I wouldn't suggest that is the "correct" thing to do.
