how do you edit /etc/profile?

ah. so you mean execute this in bash:

$ ls -al /etc/profile.d/java.sh
$ cat /etc/profile.d/java.sh

then add this to /etc/profile/

if [ -d /usr/java/${JAVA_VERSION} ]; then
        export JAVA_HOME="/usr/java/${JAVA_VERSION}"
        export JAVA_PATH="${JAVA_HOME}"
        export PATH="$PATH:${JAVA_HOME}/bin"
fi
