fc2 + checkinstall = sigsegv

hello,

i have a clean install of fedora core 2 and checkinstall 1.6.0

..., but every time i try to make and install *.rpm with checkinstall,
it gets killed by SIGSEGV:

gammu-0.96.0:
--------------------
Installing docs to /usr/share/doc/gammu
make: *** [installdocs] Segmentation fault (SIGSEGV)

XaoS-3.1:
--------------------
/usr/bin/install -c -d /usr/share/XaoS
make: *** [install] Segmentation fault (SIGSEGV)

...etc

i've tried other versions of checkinstall, but nothing changed.

does anybody know what's going on and how to deal with it?
