It uses plain text for the display of the encrypted /etc/shadow file.

Yes, automounting home directories works in fedora.  In fact, it is
really easy to upgrade/install from each fedora release using the
automount home directories and remote authentication- since there is
no user data on the local PC, it makes upgrading/replacing/installing
that much easier.
