nautilus - hidden files and file types

1) How do you configure nautilus to show hidden files, those preceded by
a . (dot) in the file name?

2) Also, I can not get file type association to applications to take
effect.  For example, I am trying to define a type .f90 and associate it
with an editor.  I am also trying to give it an associated icon. Can't
seem to get it to accept it after I have made the changes in
preferences.
