I find that when debugging X, it's easiest to switch to init level 3
and start x using the 'startx' script. that way the errors come to
stdout, and if it fails, you see it quickly rather than the display
manager trying to start X 5 times in a row, waiting for it to actually
fail.
don't forget to check /var/log/syslog and your X error file (~/.xsession-errors)
