what does the wheel group represent or what does it do??
when u run the ID command it says 10 (Wheel).

No *if* about it Tom, his grammer needs all the help it can get.
Which leads me to an observation based on 69 years of living, and now
about 20 years of interneting.
That observation is that for the most part, unless there is a real
'language problem' on the part of the poster, the level of written
english here far exceeds that presently being published by our
leading nationwide daily newspapers. Many of the posters here had to
learn english in order to carry on a meaningfull conversation
covering the technical issues of today.
And guess what? Most of those whose native tongue might be german or
some other slavic language, and have learned english in professional
self defense, have apparently studied it much more thoroughly than
many of us who speak in natively. At my age, I am still getting an
english lesson on the internet from time to time. Probably from
someone with a .de, .ru or .cx address.
We Americans are getting incredibly sloppy with our usage, some would
even go so far as to say bastardization, of the language. IMO we are
NOT improving the language by doing so.

You really only want to copy the user account information in the
passwd/shadow/group files. If you copy the files whole you will most
likely have standard accounts on one system that either don't exist on
the other or the UIDs/GIDs may have changed. This could cause problems
with permissions on any number of critical system files.
Also you should verify that the UID/GID information on the user account
information matches when you move the users data to the new system.
This will prevent a lot of permission type problems that you could run
into.

I switched from using XFree86 to Xorg when I switched from FC1 to FC2.
Now I cannot start X. The screen simply goes black and stays that way
until I Ctrl+F4 out of it back to the shell. Below is the redirected

I really don't remember ever told anyone to cover the version of you
running kernel. Such a recommendation would make no sense. If you did
understand my hint from my annotation about your posting of the result
of "uname -r" as to hide any version information then you got it totally
wrong. And I really hope you meanwhile upgraded your kernel ;) Because
that was my point, to not run kernels with know security bugs which may
used by attackers to get control over your host. Hiding kernel version
information does not help.

Got F2 (kernel 2.6.5-1.358) installed on my Presario 2100 and
dual-booting well with the original XP (BootItNG did the trick for
repartitioning the NTFS). But the modem doesn't work (Linuxant says they
have a driver) and the ethernet card won't do anything. It's the
built-in NatSemiconductor DP83815/816 10/100 MacPhyter PCI. It's eth0
and I've given it static IP of 192.168.0.11 and everything seems to be
fine. During boot it comes up and the Network GUI reports it "ok" and
"active". But the hub light is dead and no pinging gets through. Same
ethernet works perfect when I boot to XP. One tell-tale thing is on shut
down it reports "remaining active for wake-on-lan". Another odd thing is
according to the GUI, it gives "unknown" as the IRQ address. XP says
it's 11. Any ideas?

Today, I noticed that I couldn't log ssh into my FC2 workstation.
Additionally, I couldn't open up any additional Konsole terms and actually
get a command prompt.
When attempting to ssh in via putty from a Windows machine, I get this:

Server refused to allocate pty
This is a 2.5GHz Athlon, 512MB RAM. Ran RHL9 like a champ until this past
weekend.
Has anyone else seen this behavior? If so, has anyone figured out how to
get around it?

How many pts' do run now on the machine in question? Did it run out of
resources?

does anybody know when the scsi card module advansys.ko will be again
integrated and useable by default configuration in common fc2 kernel
versions? Maybe in the next upcoming 2.6.7- Kernel update?
I really missed this module in kernel 2.6.7-1.494.2.2.i686.

Hi Timothy,
Thanks. I think commenting out the lines in modprobe.conf &
modules.conf was the break through I needed. IP info I think I'll have
to extract from my uni network gurus, they'll be using dhcp I think.
